David E. Wilkins
David E. Wilkins researches AI planning and developed hierarchical planning software at SRI. He served at SRI from 1979 to 2017. A 1985 paper explains planning and abstraction levels and describes implemented solutions in SIPE. He published Practical Planning in 1988 and spent that year as a researcher in Melbourne. AAAI elected him a Fellow in 1998.

A career in AI planning
Wilkins served at SRI from 1979 to 2017 and describes his role as architect and principal programmer of a hierarchical planner and execution monitor. He published a 1985 paper on the definition and implementation of hierarchical planning.

Levels of a plan
His paper distinguishes abstraction levels from planning levels. The paper describes problems that arise when the two are mixed and two remedies implemented in SIPE.

Practical Planning
Wilkins published his 1988 book Practical Planning: Extending the Classical AI Planning Paradigm. He also spent a year as a research scientist at the Australian Artificial Intelligence Institute in Melbourne in 1988.

Recognition
AAAI elected Wilkins a Fellow in 1998. He led research projects and published in AI journals and conferences; his SRI service ended in 2017.
