David E. Smith
David E. Smith develops planning and scheduling methods that account for time, uncertainty and limits on available resources. Smith earned a Stanford doctorate in 1985. He explains that ideas from his thesis on controlling logical inference led to an interest in controlling search in planning. His research examines time, concurrency, events outside the planner’s control, uncertainty and oversubscription. These topics concern plans for settings with richer requirements than a simple action sequence.

Logical inference and planning
Smith earned a Stanford doctorate in 1985. He explains that ideas from his thesis on controlling logical inference led to an interest in controlling search in planning.

1988
Industrial planning research
Smith joined Rockwell’s Palo Alto research laboratory in 1988. He describes work in a DARPA planning initiative, collaboration with Mark Peot on conditional nonlinear planning and search algorithms for engineering design.

1997–2005
Planning at NASA Ames
Smith joined NASA in 1997 and led its planning and scheduling group for six years beginning in 1999. Smith received an AAAI fellowship in 2005.

Richer planning problems
His research explores time, concurrency, events outside the planner’s control, uncertainty and oversubscription. These topics concern plans for settings with richer requirements than a simple action sequence.
