David Doermann
David Doermann is a computer scientist whose work connects artificial intelligence with document analysis, computer vision and media forensics. He earned a bachelor's degree in computer science and mathematics at Bloomsburg, followed by computer-science master's and doctoral degrees at Maryland. At Maryland, he directed the Laboratory for Language and Media Processing, and his 1998 survey examined methods to index and retrieve document images. Applied Media Analysis brought computer-vision and document-analysis tools to mobile devices; at DARPA, he led the Media Forensics program and oversaw roughly $150 million in research funding, much of it focused on AI techniques. He later led UB's AI institute, received an honorary doctorate in 2002, became an IEEE and IAPR Fellow in 2014, and has chaired UB's computer science department since 2024.
Timeline
-
1986–1993
Degrees in computing and math
He earns a bachelor's degree in computer science and mathematics at Bloomsburg in 1986, followed by master's and doctoral degrees in computer science at Maryland in 1989 and 1993.
-
1993–2018
Searching document images
At the University of Maryland, he serves as research faculty from 1993 to 2018 and directs the Laboratory for Language and Media Processing. His 1998 survey reviews methods to index and retrieve document images without requiring complete and accurate conversion.
-
2001–2014
Taking document tools mobile
Applied Media Analysis, which he co-founded and managed from 2001 to 2014, developed an architecture that brought computer vision, image processing and document analysis to mobile devices. Its work also enabled early barcode readers and optical character recognition on mobile devices.
-
2002
An honorary doctorate
The University of Oulu awarded him an honorary doctorate of technology sciences for contributions to digital media processing and document analysis.
-
2014
Fellowships for image analysis
The IEEE elected him a Fellow for work on automatic analysis and processing of document-page imagery. IAPR named him a Fellow for document-image analysis and service to the association.
-
By 2018
Managing media forensics
By 2018, he had completed a four-year DARPA appointment as a program manager. He led MediFor teams that developed algorithms to test image and video integrity, while overseeing about $150 million in research funding, much of it for AI techniques in machine translation and voice analytics.
-
2018–2023
Building UB's AI institute
He led the University at Buffalo Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science from 2018 to 2023 after joining UB as its inaugural director. The institute opened with research aims in health, medicine and autonomous systems.
-
Since 2024
Chairing computer science at UB
He became chair of UB's Department of Computer Science and Engineering in 2024 and remained in the role in 2026. In 2025, he led an Empire AI project to train a large language model that links visual data with agriculture and climate questions.
