David Chalmers

Also known as David J. Chalmers

As of October 2026, David Chalmers is University Professor of Philosophy and Neural Science at New York University, and his stated interests include the foundations of AI. In 1990 he wrote a paper on genetic connectionism that combined genetic algorithms and neural networks, and in 2010 he published a long article on artificial superintelligence. He completed a Ph.D. at Indiana University in 1993, and he argued that the really hard problem of consciousness is the problem of experience. He published The Conscious Mind in 1996, took a part-time position at NYU in 2009, and became a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2013. In July 2026 he explored how large language models challenge traditional views of identity and ethics.
