Charles E. Thorpe
Charles E. Thorpe researches mobile robotics, computer vision and vehicle planning. Thorpe earned a doctorate in 1984 under Raj Reddy and Hans Moravec. He helped develop Navlab vehicles and became director of the Robotics Institute in June 2001. AAAI elected him a Fellow in 1996. With Terrence Fong he published a 2001 survey of vehicle teleoperation interfaces. His work connects autonomous vehicles with human supervision and research leadership.

Timeline
-
1984
Doctoral study at Carnegie Mellon
Thorpe earned his doctorate in 1984 under advisers Raj Reddy and Hans Moravec. He later worked on outdoor robotic vehicles, including computer vision, planning and system architecture.
-
1996
Recognition of outdoor robotics
AAAI elected Thorpe a Fellow in 1996. His work included outdoor autonomous robots and Navlab vehicles. Thorpe contributed to these collaborative systems as part of the group.
-
2001
A shared study of teleoperation interfaces
Thorpe and Terrence Fong published Vehicle Teleoperation Interfaces in 2001. Their paper surveys interfaces for controlling and supervising vehicles at a distance. It organizes methods for direct control, sensor displays and supervisory interaction, connecting vehicle autonomy with the information a human operator needs.
-
June 2001
Leading the Robotics Institute
CMU named Thorpe director of its Robotics Institute in June 2001 after a year as acting director. His Navlab research group developed vehicles, and he earlier helped found the robotics master’s program.
