Carla P. Gomes
Carla P. Gomes connects AI reasoning and optimization with sustainability, using computational methods for conservation, scientific discovery and energy materials. Gomes trained in AI through a doctorate in computer science at Edinburgh. Her research developed around large-scale constraint reasoning, optimization and machine learning. She received the AAAI Feigenbaum Prize in 2021 for contributions in constraint reasoning, optimization, combined reasoning and learning, and computational sustainability. It names applications in ecology, conservation and energy-material discovery.

Research career
Reasoning under constraints
Gomes trained in AI through a doctorate in computer science at Edinburgh. Her research developed around large-scale constraint reasoning, optimization and machine learning.
-
2008
A program in computational sustainability
As a Cornell professor, she received a 2008 NSF Expeditions in Computing award for computational methods for a sustainable environment, economy and society. Gomes was lead investigator of this and a later expedition, bringing computing to problems involving environmental and social constraints.
-
2016
Expanding the research network
A second expedition in 2016 supported CompSustNet. Her work ranges from wildlife preservation and poverty mapping to learning and reasoning for discovery of renewable materials. The work involved researchers across disciplines.
-
2021
Recognition for the research field
She received the AAAI Feigenbaum Prize in 2021 for contributions in constraint reasoning, optimization, combined reasoning and learning, and computational sustainability. Her work includes applications in ecology, conservation and energy-material discovery.
