Berthold K. P. Horn
Also known as Berthold K.P. Horn
Berthold K. P. Horn developed mathematical methods for machine vision, with work on image brightness, motion, shape and three-dimensional orientation. Horn researched determining lightness from an image in 1974, obtaining shape from shading in 1975 and understanding image intensities in 1977. These studies connected image measurements with properties of the scene. Horn published a closed-form solution for absolute orientation using unit quaternions in 1987. A shared 1988 paper addressed the same problem through orthonormal matrices. These works linked visual geometry with explicit mathematical methods.

1981
A shared method for optical flow
Horn and Brian Schunck coauthored Determining Optical Flow in 1981. The paper is associated with the Horn–Schunck method. Optical flow describes apparent motion in an image sequence, a useful part of visual motion analysis.

1986
A book on robot vision
Horn published Robot Vision in 1986. He coauthored LISP with Patrick Winston, first published in 1981, and coedited Shape from Shading with Michael Brooks, published in 1989.

Computing orientation
Horn published a closed-form solution for absolute orientation using unit quaternions in 1987. A shared 1988 paper addressed the same problem through orthonormal matrices. These works linked visual geometry with explicit mathematical methods.
