Researcher

Bernt Schiele

Bernt Schiele is a computer-vision researcher whose work spans object recognition, human detection and pose estimation. He studied in Karlsruhe and Grenoble, then held research posts at Carnegie Mellon and MIT and professorships at ETH Zurich and TU Darmstadt. In 2010 he founded MPI Informatics’ Computer Vision and Machine Learning department. His work includes DeepCut and DeeperCut for multi-person pose estimation and a 2016 GAN paper that generated bird and flower images from text. He is an IEEE, IAPR and ACM Fellow, a member of Germany’s Leopoldina, and an ELLIS Unit Director, Program Director and Fellow.

Timeline

  1. 1993–1997

    From study to research

He studied computer science at Karlsruhe and ENSIMAG in Grenoble, earning degrees in 1993 and 1994. A 1994 research visit to Carnegie Mellon focused on multimodal human-computer interfaces; he completed a computer-vision PhD at Grenoble in 1997.

  2. 1997–2010

    Across labs and universities

At MIT, he worked as a postdoctoral associate and visiting assistant professor from 1997 to 2000. He served as assistant professor at ETH Zurich from 1999 to 2004, then as a full professor at TU Darmstadt from 2004 to 2010.

  3. Since 2010

    A department for vision

He founded the Computer Vision and Machine Learning department at MPI for Informatics in 2010. It currently consists of five research groups.

  4. 2015–2016

    Building pose models

DeepCut jointly handles person detection and pose estimation, inferring the number of people in a scene. DeeperCut improves body-part detectors and uses image-conditioned pairwise terms to assemble body configurations. In a separate 2016 paper, Generative Adversarial Text to Image Synthesis, he and his coauthors generate plausible bird and flower images from detailed descriptions.

  5. 2018–2022

    Fellowships and an academy

He is a Fellow of IEEE. IAPR elected him a Fellow in 2018 for contributions to large-scale object recognition, human detection and pose estimation. The German National Academy of Natural Sciences Leopoldina elected him as a member in 2021, and ACM named him a Fellow in 2022 for work on object recognition, human detection and pose estimation.

  6. As of October 2026

    Serving within ELLIS

He is an ELLIS Unit Director, Program Director and Fellow. His affiliations include the Max Planck Institute for Informatics, Saarland University and ELLIS Unit Saarbrücken.
