Arun Ross
Also known as Arun A. Ross
Arun Ross studies machine learning, computer vision and biometrics, with work on recognizing people from facial images and other biometric signals. He earned a computer science degree from BITS Pilani in 1996, served on West Virginia University's faculty from 2003 to 2012, and joined Michigan State in 2013. His work includes a 2019 overview of biometric fusion and a 2025 study of foundation models for face recognition. IAPR awarded him the Aggarwal Prize in 2014 and named him a Fellow in 2018. In October 2025, IEEE named him President-Elect of its Biometrics Council for 2026; as of October 2026, he is an endowed professor in Michigan State's Department of Computer Science and Engineering.

Joining Michigan State
He joins Michigan State's faculty in January 2013 from West Virginia University. His research covers biometrics, computer vision and machine learning.
-
2014
An IAPR prize for biometrics
The IAPR awards him the J. K. Aggarwal Prize in 2014 for contributions to biometric technologies and infrastructure.
-
2018
An IAPR Fellowship
The IAPR names him a Fellow in 2018 for contributions that advance biometric technologies and extend their infrastructure.
-
2019
A survey of biometric fusion
In 2019, he coauthors an overview of biometric fusion organized around what to fuse, when to fuse and how to fuse; it reviews data quality, soft biometrics, contextual information and continuous authentication.
-
2025
Foundation models for face recognition
He coauthors a study comparing generic foundation models with domain-specific face recognition models. The study tests score-level fusion and reports improved accuracy at low false-match rates. In October 2025, IEEE Biometrics Council names him President-Elect for 2026.
