Amnon Shashua
Also known as אמנון שעשוע
Amnon Shashua is a computer vision researcher whose work extends from image recognition to driving systems, assistive wearables, language models and scientific reasoning. He studied at Tel Aviv University, the Weizmann Institute and MIT, then joined the Hebrew University faculty and published a 1999 computer-vision paper. He founded Mobileye from his Hebrew University research and later co-founded OrCam and AI21 Labs; he also leads AAI Technologies' work on reasoning systems for STEM. His honors include the 2020 Dan David Prize, the 2023 Israel Prize for Lifetime Achievement, inclusion in TIME100 AI in 2025 and election to the National Academy of Engineering in 2026. In July 2026, he told Mobileye's board that he planned to leave the CEO role when a successor was appointed.

Timeline
-
1986–1996
From study to faculty
He completed a BSc at Tel-Aviv University in 1986, an MSc at Weizmann in 1989, and a PhD at MIT in 1993. He joined the Hebrew University faculty in 1996.
-
1999
A paper on changing light
He co-authored “The Quotient Image,” a 1999 CVPR paper on class-based re-rendering and recognition with varying illumination.
-
1999
A camera reads the road
He founded Mobileye by turning Hebrew University research into a monocular vision system that detects vehicles with a camera and software algorithms.
-
2001
Building a vision chip
Mobileye chose to design a full system-on-chip for the heavy computational workload of its computer-vision stack.
-
2010
A wearable for visual access
He co-founded OrCam to use artificial vision to assist people who are visually impaired or blind.
-
2014–2017
Mobileye goes public
Mobileye went public on the New York Stock Exchange in 2014 and Intel acquired it in 2017. After the acquisition, Shashua became CEO.
-
2017–2025
Language AI and reasoning
He co-founded AI21 Labs in 2017 with Yoav Shoham and Ori Goshen. Its AI21 Studio platform offered pre-trained and custom language models for text applications. AAI Technologies, under his leadership, is developing new approaches to deep reasoning and learning for superintelligent AI in STEM.
-
2020–2026
Honors and a leadership shift
He was a 2020 laureate of the Dan David Prize in artificial intelligence, and in 2023 Israel named him a recipient of the Israel Prize for Lifetime Achievement for applied AI and automotive safety. TIME named him to its 2025 TIME100 AI list, and the U.S. National Academy of Engineering elected him an international member of its 2026 class for computer vision applied to autonomous driving. In July 2026, he told Mobileye's board he intended to leave the CEO role once a successor was appointed; the board offered him its chair.
