Amit Singhal
Also known as Amitabh Kumar Singhal
Amit Singhal worked on information retrieval and headed the core ranking team of Google Search. He earned degrees from IIT Roorkee, the University of Minnesota Duluth, and Cornell, where he studied with Gerard Salton, before working at AT&T Labs and joining Google in 2000. He became a Google Fellow in 2001, and the ACM named him a Fellow in 2011 for contributions to search and information retrieval. In May 2012 he announced the Knowledge Graph, which then held more than 500 million objects. He is a non-executive director of One 97 Communications and the founder of the Sitare Foundation.

Degrees from IIT Roorkee to Cornell
He receives a Bachelor of Engineering from IIT Roorkee in 1989 and a master's from the University of Minnesota Duluth in 1991. He completes a Ph.D. at Cornell in 1996, where he studies with Gerard Salton.

Research at AT&T Labs
After his doctorate, he works at AT&T Labs on information retrieval and speech retrieval.

Core ranking at Google
He joins Google in 2000, recruited by a friend, Krishna Bharat. In 2001 he is named a Google Fellow for rewriting the search engine, and he heads Google's core search ranking team.

An ACM Fellowship
He is named an ACM Fellow in 2011 for contributions to search and information retrieval.

Launching the Knowledge Graph
In May 2012 he announces the Knowledge Graph, which then holds more than 500 million objects and 3.5 billion facts.

Leaving Google for philanthropy
He announces in February 2016 that he will leave Google to pursue philanthropy.

Senior vice president at Uber
He joins Uber as senior vice president of engineering in 2017.

A board seat at One 97
He joins the board of One 97 Communications as a non-executive director in July 2026. He is also the founder of the Sitare Foundation and the upcoming Sitare University, and his work focuses on technical education for underprivileged students.
