Alex Luedtke
Alex Luedtke is a statistician who develops causal machine learning and automated inference methods for health research. He earned degrees in applied mathematics at Brown and biostatistics at UC Berkeley before joining the University of Washington and Fred Hutch faculty. In 2018, his work on dengue-vaccine trials used machine learning to infer prior exposure. His papers include Dimple, an algorithm that automates efficient inference from code, and DoubleGen, a doubly robust framework for generative counterfactual models. He received the 2026 COPSS Emerging Leader and Mortimer Spiegelman awards and, as of October 2026, is a Professor of Health Care Policy at Harvard Medical School.

Timeline
-
2012–2016
Brown and Berkeley degrees
He earns an ScB in Applied Mathematics from Brown University in 2012 and completes a PhD in Biostatistics at UC Berkeley in 2016 under Mark van der Laan.
-
2016–2025
Faculty at UW and Fred Hutch
From 2016 to 2025, he is a faculty member in the University of Washington's Department of Statistics and Fred Hutch's Vaccine and Infectious Disease Division. In 2018, he is an assistant professor at UW with an affiliate appointment in the Fred Hutch division.
-
2018
Machine learning for dengue analysis
In 2018, he contributes statistical methods to a reanalysis of three dengue-vaccine trials. The analysis applies machine learning to infer participants' prior exposure from a new test when baseline data are missing.
-
2019
A Director's New Innovator Award
In 2019, he receives an NIH Director's New Innovator Award as one of 60 researchers selected through the High-Risk, High-Reward Research program.
-
2024
Dimple automates efficient inference
In 2024, he introduces Dimple, an algorithm that takes code for a parameter of interest and outputs an efficient estimator. It uses automatic differentiation to avoid deriving an efficient influence function by hand.
-
2025
DoubleGen for counterfactual outcomes
In 2025, he and Kenji Fukumizu introduce DoubleGen, a doubly robust method that modifies generative-model training to mitigate confounding and model-misspecification bias.
-
2025
Stochastic gradients under nuisances
In 2025, he and his coauthors study stochastic-gradient algorithms for learning objectives with unknown nuisance parameters and prove non-asymptotic convergence guarantees. The paper appears at NeurIPS 2025.
-
February 2026
A COPSS Emerging Leader Award
In February 2026, he receives the COPSS Emerging Leader Award for work at the intersection of semiparametric theory, causal inference and machine learning.
-
July 2026
A Mortimer Spiegelman Award
In July 2026, he is named the recipient of the Mortimer Spiegelman Award.
-
As of October 2026
Professor at Harvard Medical School
As of October 2026, he is a Professor of Health Care Policy at Harvard Medical School and an affiliate in Statistics at Harvard University. His research spans causal machine learning and automated statistical inference, with applications in mental health and infectious disease research.
