Alejandro Matamala Ortiz co-founded Runway, a company that works on generative video. He left an art-direction job in Chile to study at NYU, where he met Cristóbal Valenzuela and Anastasis Germanidis. He and his co-founders started Runway in 2018, and in June 2023 the company raised a $141 million extension at a $1.5 billion valuation. In November 2024 he said Runway was the first to offer video generation from text, image or video input. As of October 2026 he is Runway's co-founder and chief innovation officer, and he leads Runway Labs, which the company introduced in March 2026.
