Alan Conrad Bovik
Also known as Al Bovik
Alan Conrad Bovik is a professor at the University of Colorado Boulder, where he holds the Provost's Chair in Engineering. His perception-based video quality measurement tools are now standards in television production, and he co-invented the SSIM index. He completed a PhD at the University of Illinois in 1984 and served as the longest-serving editor-in-chief of IEEE Transactions on Image Processing from 1996 to 2002. He received a Primetime Emmy in 2015, the IEEE Edison Medal in 2022, and the John Fritz Medal in 2024. In an April 2025 interview, he said he had dropped about half or more of his legacy course material, replacing it with deep learning models.
