Agnieszka Miguel

Also known as Agnieszka Czajka Miguel

Agnieszka Miguel is an electrical engineer at Seattle University who studies image processing and machine learning for wildlife identification. Originally from Poland, she transferred to a Florida college in 1992 and completed an electrical engineering PhD at the University of Washington in 2001. Her research covered hyperspectral image compression and algorithms that identify individual leopards in camera trap photographs. She also leads iREDEFINE, which prepares doctoral students and postdoctoral scholars for faculty careers, and was named an ASEE Fellow in 2020. As of October 2026, she chairs Seattle University's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and serves as ASEE president for 2026–2027.

Timeline

  1. 1992–1996

    Electrical engineering in Florida

Originally from Poland, she transfers to a college in Florida in 1992, during her third year of study. At Florida Atlantic University, she earns a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering in 1994 and a master's degree in 1996.

  2. 2001

    A doctorate at Washington

She completes an electrical engineering PhD at the University of Washington in 2001. Her dissertation is titled Image compression using overcomplete wavelet representations for multiple description coding.

  3. 2011

    Chair at Seattle University

After her doctorate, she works as a private sector consultant and takes a postdoctoral position at the University of Washington, where she teaches Electrical Circuits II. In 2011, she becomes chair of Seattle University's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

  4. 2012

    Compression of hyperspectral images

In 2012, she coauthors Near-lossless and lossy compression of imaging spectrometer data: Comparison of information extraction performance with Eve Riskin, Richard Ladner and Dane Barney. The paper studies how compression affects the classification of minerals and vegetation in hyperspectral images.

  5. By 2017

    Sorting snow leopard photographs

By 2017, she and two undergraduate students develop an algorithm that separates photographs of snow leopards from images of other wildlife. Working with Panthera, she applies image processing and machine learning to camera trap images.

  6. 2020

    An ASEE fellowship

In 2020, she is named a Fellow of the American Society for Engineering Education. She also receives the society's Electrical and Computer Engineering Division Distinguished Educator Award in 2020.

  7. 2022–2023

    President of ECEDHA

In 2022–2023, she serves as president of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department Heads Association.

  8. By April 2025

    Identifying individual African leopards

By April 2025, she advises Cheng Guo with Anthony Maciejewski on machine learning for African leopard identification. Their paper, Automatic Identification of Individual African Leopards in Unlabeled Camera Trap Images, describes an algorithm that identifies individual animals from their spot patterns.

  9. As of October 2026

    Seattle chair and ASEE president

As of October 2026, she is Professor and Chair of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Seattle University, where she holds the Francis P. Wood Chair. She is also an Affiliate Associate Professor in the University of Washington's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and serves as ASEE president for 2026–2027. She leads iREDEFINE, an NSF-supported workshop that prepares doctoral students and postdoctoral scholars for faculty careers.
