Abeer Alwan
Also known as Abeer Abdul-Hussain Alwan
Abeer Alwan is an electrical engineer and speech-processing researcher whose models of human speech perception and production are applied to speech recognition and synthesis. After a BSEE from Northeastern University in 1983, she completed an MIT doctorate in 1992. She joined the UCLA faculty in 1992 and was named a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America, the IEEE and ISCA between 2003 and 2011. ISCA's 2011 citation covers her work on speech synthesis and recognition. As of October 2026, she is a professor and vice chair for undergraduate affairs in UCLA's electrical and computer engineering department.

She earns a BSEE from Northeastern University in 1983 and a doctorate in engineering from MIT in 1992.

She receives an NSF Career Development Award in 1995 and the Okawa Foundation Award in Telecommunications in 1997.

Three fellowships
She is named a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America in 2003 and of the IEEE in 2008. ISCA names her a Fellow in 2011 for contributions to speech perception and production modeling and their application to speech synthesis and recognition.

She is a Lillian Gollay Knafel Fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study in 2006–2007.

With W. Chu, she publishes SAFE, a statistical approach to F0 estimation under clean and noisy conditions, in IEEE Trans. on Audio, Speech, and Language Processing in March 2012.
