How long do people shaping AI work before stepping into their first top leadership role at an existing organization (leaving out founding roles), and how does that timeline vary across sectors, organization types and eras? Across 1,131 people with a dated first appointment as chief executive, president, chief scientist, chief technology officer, chief AI or research officer, or lab or institute director and an independent dated career start (earliest work role or completed doctorate), we estimate a median prior career span of 16 years (middle half: 9 to 24 years): 13 years at companies (386 people), 16 years at universities (373 people) and 18 years at institutes and labs (372 people). Across appointment decades, the overall median went from 14.5 years in the 1990s to 16 in 2020–2026 after a peak of 17 in the 2010s, and companies had the shortest median span in all four decades.

Key findings

  • Across 1,131 people who took a top leadership role at an existing organization, the median time from a person's earliest recorded work role or completed doctorate to that first appointment is 16 years (middle half: 9 to 24 years). By sector, the median is 13 years at companies (middle half 7 to 21, 386 people), 16 years at universities (middle half 10 to 23, 373 people) and 18 years at institutes and labs (middle half 11 to 26, 372 people).
  • Across the five organization types, the median prior career span ranges from 13 years at companies to 20 years at nonprofits and institutes (15 years at government bodies, 83 people, 16 years at universities, 373 people and 19 years at standalone research labs, 64 people).
  • By appointment decade, the median prior career span of first-time appointed leaders went from 14.5 years in the 1990s (104 people) to 16 years in 2020–2026 (395 people) after a peak of 17 years in the 2010s (347 people), and the share entering their first top role with 20 or more prior career years went from 30% (31 of 104) to 40% (157 of 395) after a peak of 43% in the 2010s (148 of 347).
  • Across all 1,131 appointed leaders, 416 (37%) held an earlier dated work role at the same parent organization before taking the leadership post (median total career span 16 years, including a median of 8 years inside that organization), and 715 (63%) were appointed without an earlier dated work role there (median career span 16 years). Internal appointments make up 60% at universities (222 of 373), compared with 16% at nonprofits and institutes (35 of 225).
  • Among the 1,022 appointed leaders with a prior dated work role, those who began working at a company (303 people) reached their first top leadership role in a median of 12 years, compared with 16 years for those who started at an institute or lab (187) and 18 years for those who started at a university (532, or 52%).
