Vivek Raghavan

Vivek Raghavan is a technologist and co-founder of Sarvam AI, which builds AI systems for Indian languages and public needs. He earned degrees in electrical engineering at IIT Delhi and Carnegie Mellon, then spent nearly two decades in electronic design automation and started two companies. At UIDAI, he helped scale Aadhaar's biometric platform; he later advised Bhashini and mentored AI4Bharat, contributing to Indian-language translation. In August 2023, he co-founded Sarvam with Pratyush Kumar to develop models and products for India. TDU awarded him a D.Litt in 2025, TIME named him to its 2026 TIME100 AI list, and as of October 2026 he is a Sarvam co-founder working with C-DAC on its AI stack.

  1. 1989–2009

    Electrical design and chip tools

    At IIT Delhi, he earns a B.Tech. in electrical engineering in 1989, then completes a Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering at Carnegie Mellon in 1993. He spends nearly two decades in electronic design automation and starts two companies. Magma acquires Mojave Design in 2004; after returning to India in 2007, he becomes managing director of Magma's India operations in June 2009.

  2. 2010–2022

    Scaling Aadhaar at UIDAI

    He joins the Aadhaar programme as a voluntary chief biometric architect in 2010. From 2013 to 2022, he helps design and scale UIDAI's technology platform, including AI systems for service quality and identity fraud detection.

  3. By 2023

    Advising Indian-language AI

    Before he co-founds Sarvam AI in August 2023, he serves as chief AI evangelist at EkStep Foundation and advises Bhashini. He also serves as chief mentor at AI4Bharat, IIT Madras.

  4. August 2023

    Co-founding Sarvam AI

    He co-founds Sarvam AI with Pratyush Kumar in August 2023 to build full-stack AI models, tools and applications for India.

  5. December 2023

    Translation across 22 languages

    The first IndicTrans2 models launch in May 2023 with translation across all 22 scheduled Indic languages and English. In December 2023, he co-authors IndicTrans2-M2M, which enables direct translation in 462 directions across those languages.

  6. 2025

    A D.Litt and Aadhaar voice AI

    TDU awards him a D.Litt in 2025. In March 2025, Sarvam partners with UIDAI to deploy voice interactions for Aadhaar users, gather near-real-time feedback on enrolment and updates, and detect overcharging by service providers.

  7. 2026

    TIME100 AI and Indian models

    TIME names him to its TIME100 AI list in 2026. At the India AI Impact Summit in 2026, Sarvam presents Sarvam Vision, Bulbul V3 and Sarvam Arya for Indian-language contexts.

  8. As of October 2026

    Sarvam and C-DAC

    As of October 2026, he is a Sarvam AI co-founder. The company works with C-DAC to connect its AI models and applications with indigenous computing infrastructure.
