Victor Zue

Also known as Victor W. Zue

Victor Zue is a professor emeritus at MIT whose work includes spoken language systems that let people talk with computers. He earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering in 1968 and a doctorate in 1976. From 1989 to 2001 he led the Spoken Language Systems Group, and in 2001 he became interim director of the Laboratory for Computer Science. He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2004, and Academia Sinica named him an academician in 2008. He was named the 2012 recipient of the Okawa Prize.

  1. 1968–1976

    Degrees in electrical engineering

    He earns a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering in 1968. He completes a doctorate in 1976.

  2. 1989–2001

    Heading the spoken language group

    He leads the Spoken Language Systems Group at MIT's Laboratory for Computer Science from 1989 to 2001. The group develops systems that let people interact with computers using spoken language.

  3. 1996–1998

    Chairing a DARPA study group

    He chairs the Information Science and Technology Study Group for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency from 1996 to 1998.

  4. 2001–2011

    Directing MIT's computing labs

    He becomes interim director of the Laboratory for Computer Science in 2001. MIT names him sole director of CSAIL in 2007. He returns to teaching and research in 2011.

  5. 2004

    National Academy of Engineering membership

    He is one of three MIT professors elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2004.

  6. 2008

    Membership in Academia Sinica

    He is named an academician in the mathematics and physical science division of Academia Sinica in 2008.

  7. 2012

    The Okawa and Flanagan awards

    He is named the 2012 recipient of the Okawa Prize. In 2012 he is also named the recipient of the IEEE James L. Flanagan Speech and Audio Processing Award.
