Victor Lempitsky
Also known as Виктор Лемпицкий, Victor Sergeevich Lempitsky
Victor Lempitsky is a computer vision researcher whose work includes domain-adversarial training, Deep Image Prior, and neural head avatars. He completed a PhD at Lomonosov Moscow State University in 2007, then worked at Microsoft Research Cambridge, the University of Oxford, and Yandex, and from 2012 to 2022 he was an associate professor at the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology. With Yaroslav Ganin he introduced unsupervised domain adaptation by backpropagation in 2015, and in 2018 Dmitry Ulyanov, Andrea Vedaldi, and he presented Deep Image Prior at the IEEE Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition. He led the Samsung AI Center in Moscow from 2019 and co-founded Cinemersive Labs in 2022. He is a researcher at Sony Interactive Entertainment in London and an ELLIS Fellow in Learning for Graphics and Vision.
Timeline
-
2006–2012
A doctorate and research posts
He completes a Ph.D. at Lomonosov Moscow State University in 2007. The dissertation is Methods for 3D Reconstruction Based on Graph Cuts, advised by Alexander Vasil'evich Mikhalëv. From 2006 to 2009 he is a researcher at Microsoft Research Cambridge, from 2009 to 2011 a researcher at the University of Oxford, and in 2011 and 2012 a group leader at Yandex.
-
2012–2022
Associate professor at Skoltech
From 2012 to 2022 he is an associate professor at the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology and leads the Computer Vision group. In August 2016 the group develops an algorithm that changes the direction of the gaze in images and video in real time.
-
2015–2016
Domain-adversarial training
With Yaroslav Ganin, he proposes Unsupervised Domain Adaptation by Backpropagation, and the International Conference on Machine Learning accepts the paper in 2015. A gradient reversal layer trains feed-forward models for the adaptation. In 2016 JMLR publishes Domain-Adversarial Training of Neural Networks, with him and Yaroslav Ganin among the authors.
-
2018
Deep Image Prior
Dmitry Ulyanov, Andrea Vedaldi, and he present Deep Image Prior at the IEEE Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition in 2018. A randomly initialized neural network serves as a prior for denoising, super-resolution, and inpainting.
-
2019
Neural head avatars
In 2019 Egor Zakharov, Alexandra Shisheya, Egor Burkov, and he describe a model that learns photorealistic head avatars from a handful of images. The paper is listed in the Altmetric Top 100 and is the most widely shared paper in that list's seven-year history.
-
November 2019–2022
Lab leader in Moscow
From November 2019 to 2022 he is lab leader of the Samsung AI Center in Moscow and leads its Vision, Learning, Telepresence lab. In 2020 he leads that center and lab and is an associate professor at Skoltech.
-
August 2022–April 2026
Founding Cinemersive Labs
He co-founds Cinemersive Labs in 2022 and serves as chief science officer until April 2026. A directorship runs from August 2022 to April 2026. He is an ELLIS Fellow at Cinemersive Labs in the Learning for Graphics and Vision program.
-
Since April 2026
Research at Sony
In April 2026 he resigns as a director of Cinemersive Labs, and Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe Limited holds 75% or more of the shares. Sony Interactive Entertainment completes the acquisition by May 2026. He is a researcher at Sony Interactive Entertainment in London and a member of the Cinemersive Labs team in the Visual Computing Group.
