Ashish Vaswani

Ashish Vaswani is one of the eight authors of Attention Is All You Need, the 2017 paper that introduced the Transformer. He completed a computer-science doctorate at USC in 2014 and joined Google Brain in 2016. His later papers included Tensor2Tensor, a library with a reference Transformer implementation, and Synthesizer, which tested alternatives within attention mechanisms. Vaswani cofounded Adept AI in 2022 and Essential AI in 2023. Essential released Rnj-1 in December 2025 with Vaswani responsible for its research and engineering roadmap. He was earlier named Essential’s chief executive. The Transformer and subsequent models are collaborative work with task-specific experimental evidence.

    Vaswani coauthored Tensor2Tensor for Neural Machine Translation with a larger group that included Aidan Gomez.

    From research to startups

    Vaswani cofounded Adept AI in 2022 and Essential AI in 2023.

  5. February–December 2025

    A shift toward open models

    After a research change in February, Essential released Rnj-1 in December, with Vaswani responsible for its research and engineering roadmap.
