Timothy M. Hospedales
Also known as Timothy Hospedales
Timothy Hospedales works on data-efficient machine learning, meta-learning and few-shot recognition. He completed a computer science degree at Cambridge in 2002 and a neuroinformatics doctorate at Edinburgh in 2008, working with Sethu Vijayakumar. At Queen Mary University of London he held a postdoctoral post and then a lectureship, and he founded the Applied Machine Learning Lab, before becoming a reader at Edinburgh and a full professor in August 2020. With collaborators he introduced the Relation Network at CVPR in 2018 and published a survey of meta-learning in neural networks in September 2022. As of October 2026, he is professor of artificial intelligence at the University of Edinburgh and head of Samsung AI research in Europe, and he is an ELLIS Fellow and a 2025 IEEE Fellow.

Timeline
-
2002–2008
Cambridge and Edinburgh degrees
He completes a BA in computer science at the University of Cambridge in 2002. He completes a PhD in neuroinformatics at the University of Edinburgh in 2008, working with Sethu Vijayakumar.
-
2008–2016
Queen Mary teaching and lab
He is a postdoctoral researcher at Queen Mary University of London from 2008 to 2012. From 2012 to 2016 he is a lecturer and senior lecturer there, in the Risk and Information Management group and the Centre for Intelligent Sensing, and he founds the Applied Machine Learning Lab.
-
2016–2020
Reader then full professor
He is Reader at the University of Edinburgh from 2016 to 2020. In August 2020 he is promoted to full professor.
-
2018
The Relation Network
He co-authors Learning to Compare: Relation Network for Few-Shot Learning, which appears at CVPR in 2018. The network learns a deep distance metric to compare a query image with a few examples of a new class.
-
November 2021
An ELLIS fellowship
In November 2021 he is recognised as an ELLIS Fellow.
-
September 2022
A meta-learning survey
With Antreas Antoniou, Paul Micaelli and Amos Storkey, he publishes Meta-Learning in Neural Networks: A Survey in IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence in September 2022. The survey describes meta-learning as improving the learning algorithm itself from the experience of multiple learning episodes.
-
2025
An IEEE fellowship
He is named a 2025 IEEE Fellow for contributions to data-efficient machine learning and meta-learning.
-
As of October 2026
Edinburgh chair and Samsung
As of October 2026, he is professor of artificial intelligence at the University of Edinburgh, where he heads the Machine Intelligence group. He joined Samsung Electronics in 2019 and heads AI research for Europe from the centre in Cambridge. His research focuses on meta-learning, with applications in computer vision, language and reinforcement learning.
