Tetsuo Asano
Also known as 浅野 哲夫
Tetsuo Asano is a computational geometry researcher whose algorithms have practical applications in computer vision and VLSI design. He completed an engineering doctorate at Osaka University in 1977, taught at Osaka Electro-Communication University, and joined JAIST as a professor in 1997. His work includes a 1981 image-segmentation method, a 2002 study of Hough-transform line detection, and a 2017 framework for binary-image problems; he became an ACM Fellow in 2001 and led JAIST as president from 2014 to 2020. As of October 2026, he is a full-time auditor at Kanazawa University; in 2025, he published a paper on two-way transportation with Shin-Ichi Nakano.

Timeline
-
1977–1997
From Osaka to JAIST
He completes a doctorate in engineering at Osaka University in 1977, teaches at Osaka Electro-Communication University from 1977, becomes professor there in 1988, and joins JAIST as a professor in 1997. In 1981, he and Naokazu Yokoya publish Image Segmentation Schema for Low-Level Computer Vision in Pattern Recognition.
-
2001
An ACM Fellowship
He becomes an ACM Fellow in 2001 for his contributions to discrete algorithms in computational geometry and their practical applications to computer vision and VLSI design.
-
2002
A Hough-transform study
In 2002, he analyzes the computational limits of voting-based Hough-transform line detection and proposes new schemes that use less computation time and working space.
-
2010–2020
Dean and president at JAIST
At JAIST, he directs the Center for Graduate Education Initiative from 2010 to 2014 and serves as dean of Information Science from 2012 to 2014. He leads the institute as president from 2014 through 2020 and becomes emeritus professor and presidential adviser in 2020. In 2017, with Lilian Buzer and Sergey Bereg, he publishes a new algorithmic framework for basic problems on binary images.
-
2020–2026
Auditor at Kanazawa
He serves as a full-time auditor at Kanazawa University, a role listed from 2020 onward. In 2025, he and Shin-Ichi Nakano publish a paper on two-way transportation. They report linear-time solvability with unbounded loading capacity and NP-completeness with finite capacity; for one commodity, they give an efficient feasibility algorithm for a tree or pseudotree.
