Taghi M. Khoshgoftaar

Khoshgoftaar is Motorola Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Florida Atlantic University, where his research covers data mining, machine learning, big data analytics, software engineering, and biomedical and health informatics. He holds master's degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and North Carolina State University and a doctorate from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, and he joined the university as an assistant professor in 1985. In 2014 he became the Motorola Endowed Chair Professor and co-founded the Journal of Big Data with Borko Furht. With colleagues he published a survey of transfer learning in May 2016 and, in 2019, surveys on deep learning with class imbalance and image data augmentation. In August 2025 Google Scholar listed more than 76,000 citations to his papers, and he was an editor-in-chief of the Journal of Big Data.

    Assistant professor at FAU

    He holds master's degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and North Carolina State University and a doctorate from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He joins Florida Atlantic University as an assistant professor in 1985 and is later promoted to associate professor and then full professor.

  2. 2008–2021

    Graduate mentoring at FAU

    He receives Florida Atlantic University's inaugural Excellence in Graduate Mentoring Award in 2008. In May 2021 he has mentored and graduated 33 Ph.D. students and 62 master's students at the university. Guide2Research ranks him No. 432 in the United States and No. 720 in the world for computer science, artificial intelligence, and machine learning.

  3. September 2014

    An endowed chair and a lab

    The College of Engineering and Computer Science selects him as Motorola Endowed Chair Professor in 2014. In September 2014 he receives a National Science Foundation grant of $600,000, with a matching grant of $257,000 from Florida Atlantic University, to build a Big Data Training and Research Laboratory on the Boca Raton campus.

    A transfer learning survey

    With Karl Weiss and DingDing Wang, he publishes "A survey of transfer learning" in the Journal of Big Data in May 2016. The survey describes transfer learning as training learners on data taken from different domains.

  5. 2019

    Deep learning surveys and a lab

    In January 2019 he is a co-principal investigator on a $652,820 National Science Foundation grant for an Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning Training and Research Laboratory at Florida Atlantic University. With Justin M. Johnson, he publishes "Survey on deep learning with class imbalance" in the Journal of Big Data in March 2019, and with Connor Shorten he publishes "A survey on Image Data Augmentation for Deep Learning" in July 2019. He chairs the 18th IEEE International Conference on Machine Learning and Applications in Boca Raton in 2019.

    H-index 95 in 2024

    In September 2024 his publications have drawn more than 63,500 citations, with a Google Scholar h-index of 95, over a career at Florida Atlantic University from 1985. He has published more than 900 refereed journal and conference papers, directed 40 Ph.D. dissertations and 65 master's theses, and serves as co-editor-in-chief of the Journal of Big Data.
