Sushmita Mitra
As of October 2026, Sushmita Mitra is a full professor at the Machine Intelligence Unit of the Indian Statistical Institute in Kolkata. Her work on neuro-fuzzy and hybrid approaches to pattern recognition has applications to bioinformatics and medical imaging. A CSIR fellowship in 1989 supported her PhD research on neuro-fuzzy pattern recognition, and she held a DAAD fellowship at RWTH Aachen from 1992 to 1994. She received the IEEE TNN Outstanding Paper Award in 1994, and the International Association for Pattern Recognition named her a fellow in 2016. A Wiley book she co-wrote appeared in 1999, and The World Academy of Sciences elected her a fellow in 2022.
