Stuart M. Shieber
Also known as Stuart Shieber
Stuart M. Shieber researches computational linguistics, grammar formalisms and natural language processing. He worked at SRI’s AI Center during the 1980s and earned a Stanford computer science doctorate in 1989 before joining Harvard. His books explain unification-based grammar and natural-language analysis with Prolog. His later research connects formal grammar with translation, sentence compression and language generation. He also directed Harvard’s Center for Research on Computation and Society from 2004 to 2008, extending his career into wider questions about computing.

Timeline
-
1981–1989
Work on language at SRI
Shieber worked at SRI International’s AI Center during 1981–1989 and held a Stanford research fellowship from 1983. His work connects formal representations of language with algorithms for analysis and generation.
-
1986–1987
Explain grammar and logic programming
He published An Introduction to Unification-Based Approaches to Grammar in 1986 and coauthored Prolog and Natural-Language Analysis with Fernando Pereira in 1987. These books develop tools for representing grammar and computing with language.
-
1989
A doctorate and Harvard appointment
Shieber earned a Stanford computer science doctorate in 1989 with a dissertation on parsing and type inference for natural and computer languages. He joined Harvard as a computer science faculty member that year.
-
2004–2008 and later research
Language and computation in society
He directed Harvard’s Center for Research on Computation and Society during 2004–2008. His research also covers synchronous grammars for relating languages, with applications in machine translation and sentence compression.
