Sotirios Tsaftaris
Sotirios Tsaftaris is a machine learning and computer vision researcher whose work includes medical image analysis, representation learning and causal AI. He earned his doctorate at Northwestern University in 2006 and later led the Pattern Recognition and Image Analysis Unit at IMT Lucca. He joined Edinburgh in 2015. With collaborators, he developed a method that separates anatomical information from imaging features for heart-image segmentation. His work also includes healthcare AI research leadership and the Causality in Healthcare AI Hub.

Timeline
-
2000–2006
Engineering education
Tsaftaris obtained an engineering diploma in Thessaloniki in 2000, followed by a master’s degree in 2003 and a doctorate in 2006 at Northwestern. His training combined electrical engineering, computation and image processing.
-
2012–2015
From image analysis to Edinburgh
He led the Pattern Recognition and Image Analysis Unit at IMT Lucca from July 2012. He joined the University of Edinburgh as a Chancellor’s Fellow in September 2015, extending his research in image analysis and learning.
-
2018
Separate anatomy from imaging features
He coauthored a method for factorising learned representations in cardiac MRI. The study trained a heart-muscle segmentation network with few labelled images and many unlabelled images. The authors reported results on two research datasets.
-
2019–2024
Healthcare AI leadership
He held the Edinburgh machine learning and computer vision chair from August 2019 and directed the Causality in Healthcare AI Hub from February 2024. These roles connect methodological research with healthcare applications.
