Shawn Wang
Also known as swyx, Latent Space, AI Engineer
Shawn Wang, known as swyx, is a developer, writer, and community builder. His current work includes Latent Space, AI Engineer, and Cognition. An earlier quantitative finance career led into developer experience roles and public teaching. His 2018 Learn in Public essay encouraged people to share notes and projects as they learned. The Coding Career Handbook followed in 2020. In June 2023, The Rise of the AI Engineer described developers building applications around foundation models. He then helped establish AI Engineer conferences with Ben Dunphy. Latent Space interviews and conference sessions make his work useful to people learning the methods, tools, and practical limits of AI engineering.

Timeline
-
Before developer advocacy
A second career in software
Before his developer-experience roles, Wang worked in quantitative finance. He later worked in developer experience at companies including Netlify, AWS, Temporal, and Airbyte. He worked in developer communities and technical writing before his AI work.
-
June 2018
Learning through public work
In Learn in Public, Wang encouraged people to make learning visible through notes, talks, and small projects. The essay treats explanation as a way to improve understanding and find people with related interests. It became a recurring theme in his writing.
-
July 2020
A handbook for developers
Wang published The Coding Career Handbook in 2020. It collected lessons about learning, jobs, networks, and professional growth around programming. The book gives context for his later AI community work: he had already built a public teaching practice around developers and their careers.
-
June 2023
Naming the AI engineer
The Rise of the AI Engineer described a growing role for developers who build applications with foundation models. Wang discussed evaluation, model APIs, retrieval, and code. He presented a forecast about work, with product-specific tests and data as part of the engineering task.
-
October 2023 onward
Building a conference series
Wang worked with Ben Dunphy on the first AI Engineer Summit in October 2023. The series expanded to a World’s Fair in 2024. Its public sessions connected model builders, tool developers, and application teams through talks and practical workshops.
-
Current public work
Interviews and developer communities
His current work includes Latent Space, AI Engineer, and Cognition. Latent Space publishes technical interviews and discussions for AI engineers. These activities give him a sustained public role in how developers learn about models, agents, and the tools around them.
