Sam Gross

Sam Gross is at Thinking Machines as of October 2026; his work includes AI frameworks and Python's free-threaded runtime. He co-authored an object-detection network in 2016 and papers on PyTorch and fairseq in 2019. He joined CPython's core team as a triager in late 2021 and worked as a software engineer at Meta AI in 2023. He authored PEP 703 to make the GIL optional, became a Python core developer in 2024, and co-authored PEP 779's 2025 criteria for supported free-threaded Python.

Timeline

  1. 2016

    A MultiPath detection network

In 2016, he co-authors A MultiPath Network for Object Detection, which combines skip connections and a foveal structure with Fast R-CNN. The combined system places second in both COCO 2015 detection and segmentation challenges.

  2. 2019

    PyTorch and fairseq papers

In 2019, he co-authors papers on PyTorch and fairseq. The PyTorch paper describes an imperative Python style and GPU support. fairseq is an open-source sequence-modeling toolkit for translation, summarization, language modeling, and text generation.

  3. Late 2021

    CPython triager

He joins CPython's core team as a triager in late 2021.

  4. 2023

    Meta AI software engineer

In 2023, he works as a software engineer at Meta AI and holds M.Eng. and B.S. degrees in computer science from MIT.

  5. 2023

    Making the GIL optional

In 2023, he authors PEP 703, which proposes a CPython build that runs without the Global Interpreter Lock and includes changes to make the interpreter thread-safe.

  6. 2024

    Python core developer

In 2024, the Python Steering Council confirms his promotion, and he becomes a Python core developer.

  7. 2025

    Python free-threading criteria

In 2025, he co-authors PEP 779, which sets criteria for making Python 3.14's free-threaded build officially supported.

  8. As of October 2026

    At Thinking Machines

As of October 2026, he works at Thinking Machines.
