Researcher

Ryan M. Eustice

Also known as Ryan Eustice

Ryan M. Eustice is a roboticist whose work connects visual SLAM in underwater vehicles to automated driving. He earned mechanical and ocean engineering degrees, then published a visual SLAM paper using data from an RMS Titanic survey. At Michigan, he led the Perceptual Robotics Laboratory; at Toyota, he led mapping and localization research and advised on autonomous-vehicle policy. As of October 2026, he is senior vice president for Automated Driving Advanced Development at Toyota Research Institute and a venture partner at Aexodus.

Timeline

  1. 1998–2005

    Engineering degrees at two schools

He earns a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan State University in 1998 and a Ph.D. in Ocean Engineering through the MIT/WHOI Joint Program in 2005.

  2. 2005

    Mapping the Titanic with SLAM

He and four coauthors publish a vision-based SLAM paper for underwater vehicles, with real-world results from an ROV survey of the RMS Titanic.

  3. 2006

    Joining Michigan Robotics

He joins the University of Michigan's Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering faculty and directs the Perceptual Robotics Laboratory, where he researches SLAM for ocean surveying and naval security.

  4. 2007

    A DARPA Urban Challenge finalist

He is a core member of Team IVS, one of 11 finalist teams in the 2007 DARPA Urban Challenge.

  5. 2016

    Leading mapping at Toyota

He joins TRI-ANN as area lead for mapping and localization and retains his University of Michigan faculty position. U-M gives him the George J. Hueber Jr. Research Excellence Award in 2016.

  6. 2017

    Michigan's mobility council

Governor Rick Snyder appoints him to Michigan's Council on Future Mobility in 2017, where he contributes recommendations on autonomous-vehicle policy.

  7. September 2022

    Human-centered AI at TRI

By September 2022, he is TRI's Senior Vice President for Human-Centered AI, Human Interactive Driving, and Tech Adoption. His career moves from marine robotics into perception, planning, and prediction for automated driving.

  8. As of October 2026

    Automated driving and venture roles

He is TRI's Senior Vice President of Automated Driving Advanced Development and a venture partner at Aexodus. The division explores end-to-end models that map sensor inputs directly to driving actions. At Aexodus, he contributes technical diligence and an automotive-industry perspective to portfolio support.
