Robert M. Haralick
Also known as R. Haralick, R. M. Haralick, R.M. Haralick, ROBERT HARALICK, Robert Haralick
Robert M. Haralick is a computer-vision and pattern-recognition researcher whose work includes image texture and mathematical morphology. Born in Brooklyn, he studied mathematics and electrical engineering at the University of Kansas before joining its faculty in 1969; his career then moved through Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Machine Vision International, the University of Washington, and CUNY's Graduate Center, where his research included high-dimensional clustering. He served as IAPR president from 1996 to 1998 and received the association's King-Sun Fu Prize in 2016. As of October 2026, he is a professor emeritus at CUNY, with research interests that include machine learning and artificial intelligence.

Timeline
-
1943–1969
From Brooklyn to Kansas
Born in Brooklyn in 1943, he earned a B.A. in mathematics from the University of Kansas in 1964, then B.S. and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering in 1966 and 1967. After completing a Ph.D. at Kansas in 1969, he joined its electrical-engineering faculty.
-
1973
Measuring image texture
His early work included remote-sensing image analysis with NASA ERTS satellite data. In 1973, he and K. Shanmugam and I. Dinstein published the paper Textural Features for Image Classification.
-
1979–1986
A faculty post and a company
In 1979, he joined Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University as a professor and directed the Spatial Data Analysis Laboratory. From 1984 to 1986, he served as vice president of research at Machine Vision International in Ann Arbor.
-
1986–2000
Morphology in image analysis
From 1986 to 2000, he held the Boeing Clairmont Egtvedt Professorship in electrical engineering at the University of Washington. His computer-vision work included image-analysis methods using mathematical morphology, including the 1987 paper Image Analysis Using Mathematical Morphology with S. Sternberg and X. Zhuang.
-
1994–2016
Serving pattern recognition
The IAPR named him a Fellow in 1994 for contributions to computer vision, image processing, mathematical morphology, and service to the association. He served as IAPR president from 1996 to 1998. In 2016, he received the King-Sun Fu Prize for work in remote sensing, texture analysis, mathematical morphology, consistent labeling, and system performance evaluation.
-
2000–2019
Clustering research at CUNY
In 2000, he accepted a distinguished professorship in computer science at the CUNY Graduate Center. His later research included manifold clustering of high-dimensional data sets and pattern-recognition methods. He served two terms as executive officer of the Computer Science PhD program from July 2013 to June 2019.
-
As of October 2026
An emeritus role
He is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Computer Science at CUNY's Graduate Center, with research interests that include machine learning, artificial intelligence, image analysis, and computer vision.
