1. 1980–1985

   Harvard and Princeton degrees

   He earns an AB from Harvard in 1980 and a PhD from Princeton in 1985.

2. 1990–2010

   Data-intensive computing research

   From 1990 to 2010, he primarily works in data mining and data-intensive computing.

3. 1996–2005

   Founding Magnify

   In 1996 he founds Magnify, Inc., a data-mining company for the insurance industry, and he serves as its chairman until ChoicePoint buys it in 2005.

4. 2010

   Faculty at the University of Chicago

   He joins the University of Chicago faculty in 2010, and his work turns to data science for biology, medicine, and health care.

5. 2013–2016

   AAAS and ACM fellowships

   In 2013 he becomes an AAAS Fellow, and in 2016 an ACM Fellow.

6. June 2016

   The Genomic Data Commons

   In June 2016, the National Cancer Institute's Genomic Data Commons launches publicly at the University of Chicago, and he is its principal investigator.

7. As of October 2026

   Directing a data science center

   He is director of the Center for Translational Data Science at the University of Chicago, and since 2016 he has been co-chief of the Section of Computational Biomedicine and Biomedical Data Science in the Department of Medicine.

8. As of October 2026

   Meshes of Midscale Models

   As of October 2026, he leads the Meshes of Midscale Models initiative, which is developing AI Commons and AI Meshes for secure federated learning. His research interests include data science, AI, and machine learning.
