Rishi Sunak

Rishi Sunak is a former UK prime minister whose government hosted the first major global summit on AI safety. He served as prime minister from October 2022 to July 2024, and he is now the Conservative MP for Richmond and Northallerton. In June 2023 he announced the summit, and in November 2023 countries agreed the Bletchley Declaration at Bletchley Park. In November 2023 the government also launched the world's first AI Safety Institute. In October 2025 he became a senior adviser to Anthropic and Microsoft.

  1. 2006

    A Stanford MBA

    He earns an MBA at Stanford University in 2006 as a Fulbright Scholar, after studying philosophy, politics and economics at Lincoln College, Oxford.

  2. October 2022–July 2024

    Prime minister of the UK

    He becomes prime minister in October 2022 and holds the office until July 2024, when his Conservative Party suffers defeat at the general election.

  3. June 2023

    Announcing the first AI safety summit

    He announces in June 2023 that the UK will host the first major global summit on AI safety.

  4. November 2023

    The Bletchley Park summit

    He hosts the AI Safety Summit at Bletchley Park in November 2023, where countries agree the Bletchley Declaration.

  5. November 2023

    The AI Safety Institute

    In November 2023 he launches the world's first AI Safety Institute, a body tasked with testing the safety of emerging types of AI.

  6. January 2025

    A Hoover Institution fellowship

    In January 2025 he is named the William C. Edwards Distinguished Visiting Fellow at Stanford's Hoover Institution, where he works on economic policy and technology.

  7. October 2025

    Advisory roles at Anthropic and Microsoft

    In October 2025 he becomes a senior adviser to Anthropic and Microsoft, advising Anthropic on global strategic matters and Microsoft on geopolitical trends.

  8. As of October 2026

    MP for Richmond and Northallerton

    He is the Conservative MP for Richmond and Northallerton, a seat he wins again in 2024.
