Raymond Reiter
Raymond Reiter received his doctorate at Michigan in 1967. He later contributed to theorem proving, knowledge representation and databases. Reiter’s formal treatment of closed-world and default reasoning appeared in 1978 papers and his 1980 default logic article. This research addressed conclusions that depend on assumptions and can change when new information arrives. Reiter’s 2001 book Knowledge in Action presented logical foundations for dynamic systems, drawing on work with Hector Levesque and colleagues at Toronto. He died on 16 September 2002.
