Ravi Ramamoorthi

As of October 2026, Ravi Ramamoorthi is the Ronald L. Graham Professor of Computer Science at UC San Diego and founding director of its Center for Visual Computing. His group's light-field work on sparse images ultimately led to the neural radiance field representation, which is now widely used. After Caltech degrees in 1998 and a Stanford PhD in 2002, he held faculty posts at Columbia and UC Berkeley. He received the ACM SIGGRAPH Significant New Researcher Award in 2007 and a Presidential Early Career Award in 2008, and since January 2021 he has worked part-time at NVIDIA Research.

  1. 1998–2002

    Caltech and Stanford degrees

    He earns BS and MS degrees from Caltech in 1998 and completes a Stanford PhD in 2002.

  2. 2002–2008

    Columbia faculty and early awards

    In 2002 he joins the Columbia computer science faculty, which he leaves in December 2008. The ACM SIGGRAPH Significant New Researcher Award comes in 2007, and a Presidential Early Career Award follows in 2008.

  3. 2009–2014

    Berkeley, then UC San Diego

    From January 2009 to June 2014, he is on the faculty of UC Berkeley's Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department. He then joins UC San Diego.

  4. 2017

    IEEE and ACM Fellow

    In 2017 he is selected as both an IEEE and an ACM Fellow. The ACM Fellow honor recognizes contributions to computer graphics rendering and physics-based computer vision.

  5. January 2021

    Part-time work at NVIDIA

    Part-time work at NVIDIA Research begins in January 2021.

  6. July 2023

    Talk on neural radiance fields

    In July 2023 he gives a Frontiers of Science Award talk at the Inaugural International Congress on Basic Science. His group's light-field work on sparse images ultimately leads to the now widely used neural radiance field representation.

    Professor at UC San Diego

    He is the Ronald L. Graham Professor of Computer Science at UC San Diego and founding director of the Center for Visual Computing.
