Researcher

Ramesh Patil

Ramesh Patil studied how AI could represent causal medical knowledge and explain diagnostic hypotheses. Patil submitted Causal Representation of Patient Illness for Electrolyte and Acid-Base Diagnosis at MIT in October 1981. His thesis introduced the ABEL diagnostic program and named Peter Szolovits as supervisor. The ABEL study represents causal knowledge at multiple levels and develops techniques for illnesses involving interacting diseases. It examines how case information can be combined into concise diagnostic explanations.

    Multiple interacting illnesses

The ABEL study represents causal knowledge at multiple levels and develops techniques for illnesses involving interacting diseases. It examines how case information can be combined into concise diagnostic explanations.

  4. As of October 2026

    Explanation and information gathering
