Paul Gauthier

Paul Gauthier built Aider, an AI coding tool that helps language models edit software. He grew up in Cole Harbour, studied computer science at Dalhousie and UC Berkeley, and turned cluster-computing research into Inktomi’s web-search business. He later served as CTO at Inktomi and Groupon and led engineering at Geomagical Labs, where computer-vision work let people build and decorate 3D augmented-reality versions of their homes. With Aider, he measured model code editing, tested a two-model workflow, described context limits, and was named to receive an honorary degree from Dalhousie.

Timeline

  1. 1990s

    A Nova Scotia education

Raised in Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia, he earned a computer science degree at Dalhousie in 1994. He pursued PhD research in computer clustering at UC Berkeley and earned a master’s degree at Washington.

  2. 1996

    Turning clusters into search

His UC Berkeley PhD research on computer clustering helped create Inktomi, which he co-founded with professor Eric Brewer. As its CTO, he guided engineering for a search company built on massively parallel systems research.

  3. 2010–2013

    Engineering for Groupon

Gauthier co-founded local-search startup Ludic Labs, which Groupon acquired. He served as Groupon’s CTO from 2010 to 2013.

  4. 2021

    Designing homes in 3D

At Geomagical Labs, he worked on computer-vision technology that let people build and decorate 3D augmented-reality versions of their homes. IKEA acquired the company in summer 2021.

  5. 2023

    Testing code edits

He develops a benchmark that tests how well Aider and GPT translate natural-language coding requests into executable code that passes unit tests.

  6. September 2024

    Separating reasoning from editing

He describes a two-model workflow: an Architect model proposes a solution, then an Editor model turns it into code-editing instructions.

  7. 2025

A coding limit and an honor

While developing Aider, he said very large context windows can confuse coding models. Dalhousie named him to receive an honorary degree at its June 2025 convocation.

  8. As of October 2026

    Building Aider

He is Aider’s founder and continues to build the AI coding tool.
