Partha Niyogi
Partha Niyogi was a computer scientist and statistician at the University of Chicago whose work spanned machine learning, speech recognition and language evolution. After an MIT doctorate in 1995 and a post at Bell Laboratories, he joined the Chicago faculty in 2000. With Mikhail Belkin, he published Laplacian Eigenmaps at NIPS in 2001, a method for representing data on a low-dimensional manifold. His 2006 MIT Press book traced the interplay between language learning and language evolution, and he became Louis Block Professor in 2009. He died of brain cancer in Chicago in 2010, at age 43.
