Nancy Leveson

Also known as Nancy G. Leveson

Nancy Leveson is a system-safety researcher whose ideas now reach into AI safety work. Her STAMP accident model and its tools are widely adopted by the autonomous vehicle industry and aviation. The ACM Allen Newell Award recognized her computer-science research in 1999, and the National Academy of Engineering elected her in 2000. A 2022 chapter by Roel Dobbe brought her core lessons to today's AI system safety challenges. As of October 2026, she is a professor of aeronautics and astronautics and of engineering systems at MIT.

    In 1995 the AIAA gives her its Information Systems Award for her work on software safety.

    Joining MIT and the Newell Award
