Mohamed S. Kamel

Also known as Mohamed Kamel, Mohamad Kamel

Mohamed S. Kamel was an electrical and computer engineering professor at the University of Waterloo, whose work covered pattern recognition and neural networks. He was director of the Centre for Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence (CPAMI) and co-founded Virtek Vision International in 1986. The International Association for Pattern Recognition named him a Fellow in 2008, and IEEE Canada selected him as the 2015 recipient of the McNaughton Gold Medal. He retired as professor emeritus in July 2015 and died in 2015.

    He joins the University of Waterloo in January 1985 as a systems design engineering assistant professor.

    Co-founding Virtek Vision

    In 1986 he co-founds Virtek Vision International with Tom King, Andrew Wong and Bob Nally. Gerber Technology acquires the company in 2008.

    He is elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 2014.

  6. January 2015

    A McNaughton Gold Medal

    He is selected as the 2015 recipient of the IEEE Canada A.G.L. McNaughton Gold Medal. He is a University Research Chair and directs the Centre for Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence (CPAMI).

  7. July 2015

    Retiring as professor emeritus

    He retires in July 2015 and is named professor emeritus, continuing as an adjunct professor.

  8. December 2015

    Death of a retired professor

    He dies in 2015 as a recently retired electrical and computer engineering professor.
