Ming-Yu Liu

Also known as 劉洺堉

Ming-Yu Liu is vice president of Cosmos Lab at NVIDIA, and in June 2025 he gave a talk titled Cosmos World Foundation Models for Physical AI. He developed the neural network and app behind GauGAN, which won two SIGGRAPH awards in 2019. He earned a bachelor's degree from National Chiao Tung University in Taiwan in 2003 and a PhD from the University of Maryland in 2012. A May 2012 article he co-authored appeared in The International Journal of Robotics Research, and his SPADE paper was among the best paper finalists at CVPR in 2019.

    A bachelor's degree in Taiwan

    He earns a BE degree from National Chiao Tung University in Hsinchu, Taiwan, in 2003.

  2. 2010–2012

    A doctorate at Maryland

    In electrical engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park, he earns an MS in 2010 and a PhD in 2012. Rama Chellappa advises his doctorate.

  3. May 2012

    A robotics journal article

    In May 2012 the International Journal of Robotics Research publishes an article he co-authors.

  4. 2019

    GauGAN's SIGGRAPH awards

    In 2019 his GauGAN demo wins Best in Show and Audience Choice at SIGGRAPH Real-Time Live. He develops the neural network and app behind GauGAN with Taesung Park, Ting-Chun Wang and Jun-Yan Zhu.

    A CVPR best paper finalist

    His SPADE paper is among the best paper finalists at CVPR in 2019.

  6. June 2025

    Cosmos world foundation models

    In June 2025 he gives a talk titled Cosmos World Foundation Models for Physical AI, as NVIDIA's vice president of research.
