Michael James

Michael James co-founded Cerebras, a computer hardware company that develops deep technologies to scale and accelerate machine learning for AI applications. At SeaMicro, he worked with four future Cerebras co-founders, and AMD bought SeaMicro in 2012 for $334 million. The company began in 2015, when he and four others launched it with the aim of bringing wafer-scale computing to market. In 2020 he co-authored a paper on fast stencil-code computation on a wafer-scale processor, and in 2024 he co-authored a molecular dynamics study on a wafer-scale system. As of October 2026, he is chief architect of advanced technologies at Cerebras.

Timeline

  1. 2012

    Working at SeaMicro

He works at SeaMicro with four future Cerebras co-founders. AMD buys SeaMicro in 2012 for $334 million.

  2. 2015

    Co-founding Cerebras

He helps found Cerebras in 2015 with Andrew Feldman, Gary Lauterbach, Sean Lie and Jean-Philippe Fricker. They launch it with the aim of bringing wafer-scale computing to market.

  3. 2019

Launch of the WSE-1 and CS-1

The company he helps found introduces the WSE-1 and the CS-1 system in 2019.

  4. 2020

Stencil code on a wafer-scale processor

He co-authors 'Fast Stencil-Code Computation on a Wafer-Scale Processor' in 2020, with nine other authors.

  5. May 2024

    Molecular dynamics at wafer scale

He co-authors 'Breaking the Molecular Dynamics Timescale Barrier Using a Wafer-Scale System' in 2024. In May 2024 he says this work changes the landscape of what is possible with molecular dynamics simulations.

  6. October 2024

    Sandia-led molecular dynamics result

In October 2024 he says the success in molecular dynamics simulations is hopefully one of many to follow. He also says he is very excited to continue the partnership with NNSA.

  7. As of October 2026

    Chief architect of advanced technologies

He is chief architect of advanced technologies at Cerebras, a company he helps found in 2015. Cerebras, a computer hardware company, develops deep technologies to scale and accelerate machine learning for AI applications.
