Meng Wang

Also known as 汪萌, Wang Meng

Meng Wang is a researcher in multimedia analysis and AI whose work spans computer vision, search, recommendation, and accessible video. He earned B.E. and Ph.D. degrees at the University of Science and Technology of China, then worked at Microsoft Research Asia, a Silicon Valley startup, and the National University of Singapore before becoming a professor at Hefei University of Technology (HFUT). His work includes Visual Query Suggestion, Dynamic Captioning, Movie2Comics, and audio-visual event research. He became an IAPR Fellow in 2020, received the Xplorer Prize in 2025, and led HFUT as president in January 2026.

  1. 2003–2008

    Studying at USTC

    He earned B.E. and Ph.D. degrees at the University of Science and Technology of China in 2003 and 2008.

  2. 2009–2010

    Search and accessible video

    He coauthored “Visual Query Suggestion” for ACM MM 2009, which received a Best Paper Award. The 2010 paper “Dynamic Captioning: Video Accessibility Enhancement for Hearing Impairment” addressed video access for viewers with hearing loss.

  3. 2012

    Turning films into comics

    He and his coauthors published Movie2Comics, software that automatically turns movie scenes into comic strips.

  4. By 2014

    A researcher across institutions

    By 2014, he had worked at Microsoft Research Asia, a Silicon Valley startup, and the National University of Singapore before becoming a professor at HFUT. His research spans multimedia analysis, computer vision, search, and recommendation; ACM SIGMM recognized his work in media tagging and multimedia accessibility with its inaugural Rising Star Award.
