Public voice

Megan Garcia

Megan Garcia is a public voice on AI chatbot safety, and her lawsuit over her son's death is part of that work. In February 2024, her 14-year-old son, Sewell Setzer III, died by suicide, and in October 2024 she sued Character.AI and Google. In May 2025, a federal judge rejected Character.AI's argument that its chatbots are protected by the First Amendment. TIME named her one of the 100 most influential people in AI in 2025, and in January 2026 Google and Character.AI settled lawsuits filed by families, including hers. As of October 2026, she critiques companion chatbots and the rise of relational AI.
