Matt Perault

Also known as Matthew Perault

Matt Perault is head of artificial intelligence policy at Andreessen Horowitz, where he oversees the firm's policy strategy on AI. Earlier, he led global policy development at Facebook until 2019, when he joined Duke to direct its Center on Science & Technology Policy. At UNC-Chapel Hill he directed the Center on Technology Policy, which launched in 2022. With Jai Ramaswamy and Collin McCune, he wrote a16z's roadmap for federal AI legislation in December 2025.

Timeline

  1. 2011–2019

    Global policy work at Facebook

    He joins Facebook in 2011 after working as counsel to the Congressional Oversight Panel. In 2013 he moves to head global policy development, and in 2019 he leaves the company as head of that team.

  2. 2019

    Directing Duke's science policy center

    He returns to Duke in 2019 to direct its new Center on Science & Technology Policy, with a joint faculty appointment in the Sanford School. His degrees include a Harvard law degree, a Duke Sanford master's in public policy and a Brown bachelor's degree.

  3. April 2022

    Launching UNC's tech policy center

    In April 2022 the Center on Technology Policy launches at UNC-Chapel Hill, with him as its director and a professor of the practice.

  4. September 2025

    The Little Tech Agenda for AI

    In September 2025 he and Collin McCune unpack a16z's Little Tech Agenda for AI on a podcast, covering how to keep open source open and the roles of the federal government and the states in regulating AI.

  5. December 2025

    A roadmap for federal AI law

    In December 2025 he co-writes a16z's roadmap for federal AI legislation with Jai Ramaswamy and Collin McCune.
