Martine Adda-Decker
Also known as Martine Adda Decker
As of October 2026, Martine Adda-Decker is a CNRS director of research whose work connects speech recognition with corpus-based linguistics. She coauthored LIMSI speech-dictation research in 1994 and helped extend the lab's German broadcast recognizer to a 300,000-word vocabulary. Her later studies used large speech corpora, speaker information, and machine-learning methods to examine linguistic variation across speakers and languages. ISCA named her a Fellow in 2019, and in May 2026 she and colleagues studied wav2vec2 embeddings for French second-language pronunciation.

Timeline
-
1994
Continuous speech dictation
In 1994, she coauthors a paper on LIMSI's continuous speech dictation system with three other authors.
-
2003
A 300,000-word German system
In 2003, she and Kevin McTait report extending LIMSI's German broadcast-news transcription system from a 65,000-word to a 300,000-word vocabulary, with updated language and pronunciation models.
-
2019
An ISCA fellowship
In 2019, ISCA elects her a Fellow for contributions to multilingual speech processing and large-scale, corpus-based linguistics, and for bridging communities.
-
2022
Analyzing speech variation
In 2022, she and her coauthors use a knowledge base to study variation among speakers in more than 120 hours of French broadcast speech. In a separate 2022 study, she and coauthors use forced alignment and machine learning to examine stop voicing across five Romance languages.
-
November 2025
Supervising pronunciation research
In November 2025, she co-directs Wenxun Fu's thesis at Sorbonne Nouvelle on Mandarin-accented French.
-
May 2026
Studying wav2vec2 embeddings
In May 2026, she and Maxime Fily and Guillaume Wisniewski compare wav2vec2 acoustic embeddings with fine-grained phonetic transcriptions to study French second-language pronunciation.
-
As of October 2026
A CNRS research director
In 2026, she is a CNRS director of research and directs Jingyi Sun's thesis on Mandarin tonal reduction.
