Researcher

Malcolm Slaney

Also known as Malcolm Graham Slaney

Malcolm Slaney is an American electrical engineer whose research has focused on machine perception and multimedia analysis. He co-wrote a book on computerized tomographic imaging with Avinash Kak in 1988, and he helped build Video Rewrite, a data-driven system that synthesizes talking faces. By 2010 the IEEE Signal Processing Society recognized him as a Fellow, and in 2013 he worked at Microsoft Research on decoding listeners' attention from EEG signals in real time. In 2021 he was on the team that won the Misha Mahowald Prize for Neuromorphic Engineering. As of October 2026 he is a research affiliate at ICSI and an adjunct professor at Stanford's CCRMA.

Timeline

  1. 1988–2001

    A tomographic imaging book

He co-writes Principles of Computerized Tomographic Imaging with Avinash Kak as a graduate student, and IEEE Press publishes it in 1988. SIAM republishes the book in 2001.

  2. 1997–2023

    Video Rewrite at SIGGRAPH

He helps build Video Rewrite, a data-driven system that synthesizes talking faces and appears in a SIGGRAPH 97 paper. ACM SIGGRAPH cites the work in 2023.

  3. 2010

    Named an IEEE Fellow

The IEEE Signal Processing Society names him among 38 members who are recognized as IEEE Fellows as of 1 January 2010.

  4. 2013

    Real-time EEG attention decoding

In February 2013 he works at Microsoft Research on Decoding Auditory Attention (in Real Time) with EEG. The study sets out to decode a listener’s attentional focus from EEG signals in real time.

  5. January 2014

A principal scientist at Microsoft Research

In January 2014 he is a principal scientist at Microsoft Research (Silicon Valley).

  6. 2021

    A Misha Mahowald Prize

In 2021 he is on the team that wins the Misha Mahowald Prize for Neuromorphic Engineering.

  7. As of October 2026

    Research affiliate at ICSI

As of October 2026 he is a research affiliate at ICSI and an adjunct professor at Stanford's CCRMA. He is an American electrical engineer whose research has focused on machine perception and multimedia analysis.
