Timeline

1. 1992–1997

   Degrees in Timișoara and Nice

   She earns bachelor's and master's degrees at the West University of Timișoara in Romania in 1992. At the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis, she completes a second master's degree in 1992 and a doctorate in 1997, with a dissertation jointly supervised by Gilles Aubert and Michel Rascle.

2. 2000–2003

   UCLA faculty and a Sloan fellowship

   After a temporary position at Paris Dauphine University, she joins the University of California, Los Angeles faculty in 2000. She receives a Sloan Research Fellowship in 2003.

3. 2001

   The Chan–Vese segmentation method

   With Tony F. Chan, she publishes the active-contour segmentation method in 2001, and the Chan–Vese method is named after both of them.

4. 2003

   Image decomposition and restoration

   With Stanley Osher, she publishes an image decomposition paper in Multiscale Modeling and Simulation in 2003.

5. June 2010

   Doctoral students at UCLA

   Pascal Getreuer completes a PhD in June 2010 as one of her doctoral students at UCLA.

6. 2016

   Variational methods in image processing

   With Carole Le Guyader, she writes the book Variational Methods in Image Processing, published by CRC Press in 2016.

7. As of October 2026

   A professorship at UCLA

   She is a professor in the Department of Mathematics at UCLA.
