Krishna P. Gummadi
Also known as Krishna Gummadi
Krishna P. Gummadi is a computer scientist whose work spans networked systems, online social networks and fair machine learning. He earned a B.Tech. at IIT Madras in 2000, joined MPI-SWS in October 2005, coauthored an online-network study in 2007, and received an ERC Advanced Grant in 2017. He studied algorithmic decision fairness in 2016 and 2018, and in April 2026 explained how computing architecture can give AI models agency; as of October 2026, he is a Scientific Member and Director at MPI-SWS and an ELLIS Fellow.

Timeline
-
2000–2005
Degrees in computer science
He earns a B.Tech. in Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Madras in 2000 and a Ph.D. in the same field at the University of Washington in 2005.
-
October 2005
Joining MPI-SWS faculty
He joins MPI-SWS faculty as an independent researcher in networked systems in October 2005, in a post comparable to a U.S. tenure-track assistant professorship.
-
2007
Mapping online social networks
At IMC 2007, he coauthors “Measurement and Analysis of Online Social Networks” with Alan Mislove, Massimiliano Marcon, Peter Druschel and Bobby Bhattacharjee.
-
2016
Defining classifier unfairness
In a 2016 paper, he and collaborators define disparate mistreatment through classifier misclassification rates, then add fairness constraints to the learning formulation.
-
2017
An ERC Advanced Grant
He receives an ERC Advanced Grant in 2017 for “Foundations for Fair Social Computing,” a project focused on fairness and transparency in machine-based decision making for social computing systems.
-
2018
Studying fairness judgments
In 2018, he and collaborators survey 576 people about features used in criminal-risk prediction. Their framework identifies eight properties, including relevance, volitionality and reliability, that shape judgments about algorithmic fairness.
-
As of October 2026
Director and ELLIS Fellow
In April 2026, he explains how computing architecture gives AI models agency and discusses the social risks of AI agents. He is a Scientific Member and Director at MPI-SWS and an ELLIS Fellow.
