Researcher

Kalyanmoy Deb

Kalyanmoy Deb is a researcher in evolutionary computation whose work addresses multiobjective optimization and its links to AI and machine learning. At IIT Kanpur, he and students developed NSGA-II, then published a fuller version in 2002. At Michigan State, he established COIN Lab and developed NSGA-III and machine-learning-assisted optimization methods. He won the Infosys Prize in 2011, became a University Distinguished Professor in 2021, and was named an ACM Fellow in 2022. Since 2026, he is an Endowed Shelby Distinguished Professor of Computer Science at the University of Alabama.

    An engineering degree

He earns a Bachelor of Technology in Mechanical Engineering at IIT Kharagpur in 1985 and works at Engineers India Limited in New Delhi from 1985 to 1987.

  2. 1989–1992

    Graduate study in Alabama

At Alabama, he completes an MS in Engineering Mechanics in 1989 and a PhD in 1991. He serves as a visiting research assistant professor at the University of Illinois in 1991–1992.

  3. 1993–1997

    Building KanGAL at IIT Kanpur

He joins IIT Kanpur's mechanical engineering department in 1993 and establishes KanGAL there in 1997.

  4. 2000–2002

    Developing NSGA-II

With Amrit Pratap, Sameer Agarwal, and T. Meyarivan, he develops NSGA-II at KanGAL in 2000. The team publishes it at PPSN in 2000, then publishes a fuller version in IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computation in 2002.

  5. 2011–2023

    COIN Lab and AI methods

He joins Michigan State as the Koenig Endowed Chair and receives the Infosys Prize in 2011, then establishes the COIN Laboratory in 2012. His research produces NSGA-III and machine-learning-assisted optimization; MSU names him University Distinguished Professor in 2021. ACM names him a Fellow in 2022 for contributions to evolutionary multiobjective optimization and decision support; in 2023, he discusses evolutionary computation's role in AI and machine learning, including neural architecture search.
